Food and Wine at Grootbos

Every mouthful. Every drop. Every glance at every view. Dining at Grootbos is an experience in its own right, with its unique combination of fresh organic produce, a world-class natural setting and our hugely experienced culinary team.

Culinary Experiences

Taste the spray of the sea in every forkful of your delectable fish fillet. Bite into a homemade tortellini as the flavour bursts into your mouth. Delight as you nibble on a whisky infused chocolate torte with salted caramel. Every meal at Grootbos is an exceptional dining experience packed with texture, flavour and colour.

Wine Experiences

Tantalise your tastebuds during a food and wine pairing, enjoy dinner with wines specially selected by our highly trained sommeliers or quench your curiosity by discovering more about wine-makers on a guided farm tour. Until you see the tremendous hand-picked collection of wines in our cellar, it is difficult to understand our passion for good wine.

Wine and Food Pairing

Wine and food pairings are hugely popular with guests who want to immerse themselves in the tastes of this unique area. For larger groups we offer a 6-course food & wine-pairing menu that is individually crafted and never repeated.

For smaller groups you can choose to experience Dinner with the Sommelier, who’ll entertain you with stories and guide you through the entire food & wine pairing, explaining each item as the evening progresses. We keep this experience purposefully small and intimate, with no more than eight guests

Directions from Cape Town

Take the N2 from Cape Town, past the airport to Somerset West. Either follow the N2 over Sir Lowry’s Pass turning onto the R43 after the Houhoek Pass, or take the R44 along the coast and turn onto the R43 to Hermanus. Drive through Hermanus and Grootbos is situated 13km past Stanford on the R43.

Directions from the Garden Route

The N2 brings you west past Swellendam and Riviersonderend. 10km past Riviersonderend turn onto the R326 to Stanford. At Stanford turn left onto the R43. Grootbos is situated 13 km from Stanford on the R43.

Coastal Scenic Route from Cape Town

The drive from Cape Town will take you along the R44 from Gordon’s Bay to Hermanus. One of the top scenic routes in Southern Africa, it hugs the coastline with amazing views of the ocean (and possibly even whales between July and November). The route winds through the Kogelberg Nature Reserve, known for its beautiful fynbos, high mountain peaks, steep kloofs, valleys and several tributaries of the Palmiet River.

En-route to Grootbos you can visit Stony Point in Betty’s Bay, which is home to one of only three breeding colonies of African Penguins on the South African mainland. There are pathways leading past the penguin nests and you’ll have opportunities to snap photographs of these amazing creatures.

After leaving Stony Point you’ll pass the Harold Porter Botanical Garden towards Kleinmond. Once you’ve reached Kleinmond the R43 leads you towards Hermanus, which is wedged between mountain and sea offering spectacular views over Walker Bay. Drive through Hermanus, pass Stanford and you’ll arrive at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve.
